When I first entered the tech world, I didn't come in with a silver spoon or an elite network. I started the hard way — cold emails, club meetups, and building momentum from scratch. I transferred into CSU Chico from Butte College with a clear goal: to break into web development because that's where the world was moving.
"The web is where commerce happens — and I wanted to be a part of shaping it."
So I founded the Web Development Club at my university — not because I had all the answers, but because I wanted to learn with others. What surprised me was this: when people showed up, they weren't just looking to learn together — they were looking to learn from me. That moment was the beginning of my path not just as an engineer, but as an educator.
After a cold email to ZURB, I landed an internship and built Yeti Launch — an Electron app that launched publicly, showed up in developer tutorials, and got me up front at meetings hosted at GitHub and Slack HQ. That project became my proof that I could ship real software.
💡 Key Lesson: Building in public creates opportunities you never expected.
I shook hands, asked questions, and when someone said "You should apply — you'd be great," I got my first job offer: $80K/year. No connections, just proven ability to build and learn. That became the foundation for everything that followed.
💡 Key Lesson: Skills speak louder than connections when you can prove them.
Since then, I've worked my way up to become a Software Engineering Manager, supporting 30+ engineers, delivering at enterprise scale, and helping others succeed. I've taught Computer Science courses at the college level, mentored junior developers, and watched careers launch — not just because of what people learned, but because of how they learned.
When I stepped into the classroom, I realized something crucial: most coding education is backwards. We teach syntax before concepts, tools before understanding, frameworks before fundamentals. Students memorize without comprehending, copy without creating.
I built this course to fix that. Every lesson is designed around how real developers actually think and work.
Started from scratch at Butte College. No CS background, just curiosity and determination to break into tech.
Cold email landed ZURB internship. Built Yeti Launch. Spoke at GitHub & Slack. First offer: $80K.
Grew into supporting 30+ engineers at scale. Mentored junior developers through senior level. Taken products from zero to one with one goal. Win win win!
Teaching Computer Science. Creating the course I wish I'd had when starting out.
Join me in learning the skills that have been battle-tested in real engineering environments. Let's build the products that will shape our future.
